I have a Dell XPS 630i, and facing having to reinstall Windows 7 for various reasons, I decided to make the best of the situation and buy a new SSD drive to install it on. I bought a Kingston SSDNow 96GB drive, which arrived with me today.I have installed it into my PC and the drive is recognised by the BIOS without any problems. When I boot into my existing Windows 7 installation however, there is no sign of it at all in the Disk Management window.I've tried starting the Windows 7 installation too, and it also fails to see the disk.I can't see any BIOS settings that I can use to reconfigure the drive to make it visible. I've tried switching to different SATA connections without any luck. Can anyone help me to get this working please? Many thanks,Adam. Welcome to the forum.I believe the stock motherboard does not support SSD's. A few users have tried upgrading to SSD's on the stock board, and all of them that I have seen get the same result with no explanation as to why. I don't know if that is the case for everyone, as I have only seen a handful of users try to use an SSD on the stock board. My guess is that it has something to do with not having AHCI support on the motherboard. I have never tried an SSD back when I had my 630i, so I cannot say for sure. But if you search the forums, you will see you are not the only one that has this problem. Even if it did work, your SSD would degrade rapidly because of the lack of TRIM and Garbage Collect support from not having AHCI mode on the motherboard, even though your drive supports those functions.I hope this helps. I put an SSD (OCZ Agility 2) in my stock XPS630i and it worked fine.

When I say 'fine' I mean with several annoyances like no AHCI, not able to update OCZ firmware, and others. (I eventually took it out and put it in a new build.)But it sounds like you still have your OS on your other drive as well. I disconnected the other hard drives, hooked up the SSD and installed Windows 7 on it.

Then added the other hard drives (non-system).Sorry I can't offer help about why your system doesn't see it. Seems like it should.

SSD PNY 120 gig used in the 630i. In XP!You need to partition a 99 megabyte partition.I did it using a windows 7 disk to format the drive. The removed and installed xpDid alignment as well. Was missing something with this install, would have to restart once to function. Now it has stopped for quite a while. Not sure why.Backing up is mandatory.Like a Maserati, fast but easily broken.Solution to no access to a non working SSD:Put on your 7200 rpm disk drive with windows installed onlyturn off, add the SSD as a slaveUnless there is physical damage, most of the time you can access the data.
