M1 Inland Carbine Serial Numbers
How do I verify the age of my M1 Carbine? It belonged to my friends father who passed. He isn't into firearms so I bought it from him. Its in great condition, no rust, stock looks great (wood). I just don't know anything about this rifle. I you tubed how to disassemble it and gave it a full clean and lube. Its in great condition.
My main concern is the age, I want to see what I fell into, and see if I would sell it or keep it. Is there a way to tell by the serial number or something?ETA: I was doing a little reading. It doesn't have the push button safety, it has a little lever you pull down and a bayo lug. All Parts seem to be original, considering the fact that everything seems to be 'equally worn/ equally old looking'Thanks,Dan.
The rear sight doesn't flip up. It is adjustable for elevation it seems, because you can slide the aperture forward and back and it says 1, 2, 2.5 and 3, which i assume stands for meters. On the rear sight next to the windage knob there seems to be a tiny shield looking mark.
How to Identify an Original M1 Carbine, Part 1, Receivers, Types, Markings, Characteristics For Collectors Only, North Cape Publications. I am trying to track down information on my M1 Carbine made by Inland Division. The serial number is XC 43 which is unusual based on what I.
In front of the serial # (1581744) and under the rear sight I can only make out a few letters. The the sight covers the middle letters and on the other side i can make out the last letters. Behind the sight further back there is a 'W' in front of a screw.
The bottom of the stock has a 'P'. On the safety latch it says 'J.A.O'. Looking in the mag well from the bottom, as i slide the bolt slightly back as it turns i think i see a 'U'. The medal part that holds the 2 pieces of the stock together has 'SA' on it. It does have a bayo lug.
On the front of the barrel I can see 'INLAND MFG DIV General Motors 12 - 43'.This is all I can see without taking it apart again. Is that enough, or do I need to take it apart again? So what do i have here? Originally Posted By MSB392:the rear sight doesn't flip up. Serial number puts it at the very begininng of their production so probably late '42 or '43. The rest of the gun is a mixmaster with parts from winchester, underwood and an Inland barrel, plus others. Post some pics of your new gun! Go over to the 'M1carbine.net' forum, and the guys there will tell you anything you need to know about that spiffy little carbine, a great bunch of guys, BTW. I have 5- M1 carbines, and 1-M2, all 'inlands'. 3 of these have the 'criterion' barrels, and are real shooters. These little fellas have to be one of the most 'fun-guns' out there, and they are very reliable.
I don't even remember the last time i had a FTF––FTE, or failure of any type. I would not hesitate to use one in a SHTF moment, my uncle carried one for 4 years during WW2, and came back wounded twice, though.
